Dennis A Bloomfield, MD
Professor,
Clinical Research, Richmond University Medical Center, New York, USA
Born and educated in Australia, Dr. Bloomfield continued his cardiology training at the Hallstrom Institute in Sydney in 1960, Vanderbilt University in Tennessee in 1963, and the Heart Hospital in London until 1967. He subsequently directed the cardiac catheterization laboratory at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York, before accepting the Chair of Medicine at Richmond University Medical Center in 1975. Following his retirement from clinical practice in 2012, he became the Director of Clinical Research at the same institution. His academic titles at New York Medical College include Emeritus Professor of Clinical Medicine and Associate Dean.
His early cardiology research focused primarily on cardiac catheterization, including studies on left ventricular function, pulmonary embolism, and valvular disease. His major contributions include work in indicator dilution theory and practice, transseptal catheterization techniques, foreign body retrieval from the heart, and reducing radiation exposure. More recent studies have focused on white coat hypertension.
In his role as Director of Clinical Research, mentoring, teaching, and supervising hospital research have occupied much of the past fifteen years.
Dr. Bloomfield lives with his wife on Staten Island, overlooking the Verrazzano Bridge, while his three daughters and grandchildren are spread across the globe. He remains active in tennis, golf, sailing, and flying, and enjoys taking advantage of the cultural opportunities that New York City offers.
