Biography

Dr. Bruce A. Stevens (PhD, Boston University, 1987) is the Wicking Professor of Ageing and Practical Theology at Charles Sturt University, Canberra, Australia. He was ordained in the Anglican Church in 1980 and served in parish ministry until 1993. He is an endorsed clinical and forensic psychologist who has authored seven books published by organizations such as Random House, HarperCollins, PsychOz Publications, Australian Academic Press, and Wiley-Blackwell. He is an active member of Wesley Uniting Church.

Psychology, ageing, spirituality, and theology.

Biography

Francesco Landi is an Associate Professor of Internal Medicine at the Catholic University of Rome, School of Medicine. He is responsible for the rehabilitation unit and two nursing homes affiliated with the Department of Geriatrics at A. Gemelli University Hospital.

He has served as a Visiting Assistant Professor at Brown University School of Medicine, Department of Community Health. His contributions to advancing scientific knowledge and medical practice include active involvement in research and its application to patient care.

His main research interests include geriatric assessment, nutritional issues, sarcopenia, models of healthcare services for older adults, and geriatric pharmacoepidemiology.

Prof. Landi serves on the Scientific Committee of the Italian Geriatric Society, on the editorial boards of several international geriatric journals, and as a peer reviewer for numerous international medical journals. He has acted as Principal Investigator in many multicenter national and international trials. In addition, he is a member of national and international expert groups working on guidelines in the fields of nutrition, sarcopenia, and functional status in older adults.

Prof. Landi has authored over 200 peer-reviewed original papers in international medical journals, many focusing on frailty and functional status in older people. He is particularly interested in the role of nutrition in the integrated care of older adults and has contributed to the development of the European consensus on the definition and diagnosis of sarcopenia.

Biography

Alexa Ioana Dana graduated from the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Grigore T. Popa,” Iași, Romania, in 1986. She has been a senior specialist in Internal Medicine since 1998 and in Geriatrics and Gerontology since 2007.

In this capacity, she founded the Geriatric Clinic (25 beds) in 2004 at the Clinical Hospital “Dr. C. I. Parhon,” Iași—the only such facility at that time in the North-East region of Romania. Her clinic specializes in the therapeutic management of complex cases, including geriatric emergencies, individualized treatment of patients with multiple severe conditions, identification of iatrogeny and polypharmacy, and the management of frailty-related fractures (with or without surgical treatment).

The clinic also includes an outpatient unit focused on the early detection and prevention of frailty and malnutrition, as well as education and personalized treatment for older adults affected by these conditions.

Dr. Dana has been involved in academia since 2001 and has served as a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics–Gerontology at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy “Grigore T. Popa,” Iași, since 2014. In this role, she introduced geriatrics into the curriculum for medical students and nurses in 2004.

She is currently Head of the Geriatric Department, Coordinator of the Residency Training Program in Geriatrics and Gerontology, and Co-coordinator of the Residency Training Program in Internal Medicine. She also serves as Vice-President of the Romanian Society of Geriatrics and Gerontology.

Her medical experience and research activity are reflected in 42 original papers, 6 books, and contributions to several textbooks in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Iatrogeny. One of her main areas of interest is the identification of iatrogeny in the therapeutic management of elderly patients; this focus has led to the organization of the symposium “Iatrogeny and Geriatrics” since 2006.

Biography

Dr. Poon Wai-kwong has served as a Contract Professional Consultant for various hospitals, specializing in healthcare professional training, hospital quality, and patient safety. His areas of expertise include emergency and disaster nursing, infection prevention and control, hospital quality and safety management, and nursing informatics.

Between 2018 and 2020, he supported St. Teresa’s Hospital as Quality, Safety, and Administration Manager during its ACHS accreditation process. He also served as an Auxiliary Medical Nursing Officer for the Hong Kong Government Flying Service from 2002 to 2023.

In addition, Dr. Poon has worked intermittently as a local undergraduate tutor for foreign universities in Hong Kong since 1996 and has received wide recognition for his teaching contributions. Since 2005, he has been appointed Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Faculty of Medicine, Accident and Emergency Medicine Academic Unit, at The Chinese University of Hong Kong. He has also previously served as an Honorary Professor at the School of Nursing, The University of Hong Kong.

Before entering academia, Dr. Poon held various clinical specialist and administrative management positions in hospitals across Hong Kong. His last major clinical leadership role was as Director of Nursing at Hong Kong Adventist Hospital, a position he held from 2007, after which he continued to serve as Honorary Nursing Advisor until the end of 2015. He is recognized as one of the pioneers in promoting mobile nursing technologies using PDA and iPad systems in private hospitals. During his tenure, he oversaw the establishment of a new operating theatre floor and was responsible for setting up the only private hospital Minimally Invasive Surgery Training Center in the institution.

Prior to 2007, Dr. Poon worked at the Infectious Disease Control Training Centre of the Hospital Authority Head Office and was later seconded to the newly established Centre for Health Protection, Infection Control Branch, following the SARS outbreak. Serving as an Advanced Practice Nurse (Infection Control), he was responsible for hospital and community infection control training, as well as institutional outbreak prevention and management throughout Hong Kong. He later stepped down from this role to become Director of Nursing in the private healthcare sector.

In 2007, Dr. Poon achieved Fellow status in Health Services Executive Management from both the Hong Kong College of Health Service Executives (FCHSE) and the Australasian College of Health Service Management (FCHSM). He was also awarded Fellowship status by the College of Nursing and Health Care Management (FHKAN Nursing & Health Care Management) and the College of Community and Public Health Nursing (FHKAN C&PH – Occupational Health) under the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing in May 2012 and May 2014, respectively.

He served as President of the College of Nursing and Health Care Management and as a Council Member of the Hong Kong Academy of Nursing until September 2024. In 2009, Dr. Poon was appointed as a Council Member of The Nursing Council of Hong Kong for a three-year term and subsequently served as a co-opted member of its Education Committee until 2023. He also completed professional training and obtained the title of Legal Nurse Consultant in Hong Kong in 2009.

Committed to advancing healthcare informatics in Hong Kong, Dr. Poon has served as a Council Member of Hong Kong NursInfo since 2005 and has been Chairman of the Association since 2012. He also served as a Council Member of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS Asia-Pacific) until 2014, contributing to the promotion of healthcare informatics management across the Asia-Pacific region.

Dr. Kerr maintains an active clinical practice in rheumatology, including providing consultative services to other subspecialists at the Medical Center. Since the mid-1980s, she has established and expanded rheumatology clinics at North General Hospital, bringing rheumatology expertise to an area of East Harlem where such services had not previously existed.

Her research has included studies on tumor necrosis factor inhibition for the treatment of severe psoriatic arthritis. She has a particular interest in geriatric rheumatology and runs a rheumatology clinic within the Coffey Geriatric Practice.

In addition, Dr. Kerr developed the Annenberg Connective Tissue Disease Clinic, which is operated in collaboration with fellows and serves as an important component of rheumatology training for residents and medical students. The complexity and challenging nature of connective tissue diseases in the inner-city population have made this clinic an important referral center for clinical trials and observational studies.

Dr. Armin Shahrokni is an Assistant Professor of Colorectal Oncology and Geriatrics at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York, USA. His primary research focuses on the treatment of older adults with cancer, particularly those with gastrointestinal malignancies.

He is interested in improving the quality of care and symptom management for older cancer patients. In addition, he has dedicated his work to evaluating novel communication and monitoring technologies aimed at reducing hospitalizations and emergency department visits among older adults with cancer.

Dr. Shahrokni is a member of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, the American Geriatrics Society, the International Society of Geriatric Oncology, and the International Society of Gerontechnology.
