Biography:

Cassian Sitaru (born 22 November 1971 in Arad, Romania) is a physician-scientist at the University of Freiburg, Freiburg, Germany. He studied medicine and psychology in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and earned doctoral degrees from the Medical Faculty of “Iuliu Hațieganu” University in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, and the University of Würzburg, Germany.

Dr. Sitaru trained in dermatology and conducted postdoctoral research at the universities of Cluj-Napoca (Romania), Würzburg, and Lübeck (Germany). Further training in clinical pathology has strengthened and expanded his expertise in inflammatory autoimmune diseases.

His research focuses on fundamental mechanisms of pathogenic autoantibody production and inflammatory autoimmune tissue damage, as well as translational approaches for developing diagnostic tests and novel therapeutic strategies in autoimmune dermatoses. Based on his research achievements in immunodermatology, he obtained his habilitation (venia legendi) and established a research group focusing on autoimmune skin diseases, with particular emphasis on blistering disorders.

He has published numerous peer-reviewed articles and serves as a reviewer for several medical journals, including the Journal of Investigative Dermatology, Journal of Immunology, and Journal of Clinical Investigation. He is also a member of the editorial boards of the Open Pathology Journal, Open Autoimmunity Journal, Biology and Therapy of Cancer Cell, and Faculty of 1000 Medicine (Dermatology section).


Research Interests:

Pathomechanisms of pathogenic autoantibody production and inflammatory autoimmune tissue damage; development of diagnostic tests and novel therapeutic strategies in autoimmune dermatoses.

Biography:

Dr. Jane M. Grant-Kels is the founding Chair of the Division and later the Department of Dermatology at the University of Connecticut Health Center, where she also serves as Professor of Dermatology, Pathology, and Pediatrics. She is the Director of the Dermatology Residency Program, which she played a major role in establishing in 2007. She is also the Director of the Dermatopathology Laboratory, the Cutaneous Oncology Center, and the Melanoma Program. In addition, she serves as Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs.

Dr. Grant-Kels received her BA degree from Smith College in 1971 and her MD from Cornell University Medical College in 1974. She completed her training in pediatrics and dermatology at The New York Hospital–Cornell Medical Center, followed by a dermatopathology fellowship at New York University under the mentorship of A. Bernard Ackerman.

She serves on numerous boards and editorial boards in her field. She is the Founding Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Clinical Medicine and Founding Co-Editor-in-Chief of the International Journal of Women’s Dermatology.

Dr. Grant-Kels has published over 225 manuscripts, contributed to 80 book chapters, guest-edited 18 journal issues, and edited or co-authored six books. She is currently a member of the Board of the Women’s Dermatologic Society and the Board of the American Academy of Dermatology.

Biography:

Yanhua Liang, M.D., Ph.D., is an Associate Professor in the Department of Dermatology at Nanfang Hospital, Southern Medical University, China. He received his Ph.D. in Dermatology in 2007. He completed a two-year postdoctoral training at The Jackson Laboratory, USA, before joining the faculty of Yale University School of Medicine in 2010.

Dr. Liang identified the CYLD1 gene as the disease-causing gene in multiple familial trichoepithelioma and XBP1 as a genetic risk factor for vitiligo in the Han Chinese population. He has also conducted in-depth research on the biological function of SHARPIN.

In addition to molecular and basic research, he has developed novel biomaterials and techniques for transdermal gene delivery and has modified in vivo models for hair follicle reconstitution. He has established a translational skin research program focusing on gene identification, gene function, and gene correction in genodermatoses.

Dr. Liang is the author of more than 60 peer-reviewed publications.

Biography:

Professor Georgi Tchernev completed his medical education in 2001 at the American University “Benjamin Franklin” in West Berlin. He subsequently applied for and was accepted as a PhD student in the Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Allergology under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Constantin Orfanos and Prof. Dr. Christoph Geilen. During this period, he also worked as an assistant physician/resident at the University Hospital Benjamin Franklin in the Departments of Dermatology, Venereology, and Allergology.

From 2004 to early 2006, he worked as a resident in the Departments of Dermatology, Venereology, Allergology, and Immunology at the Municipal Hospital Dessau, an academic teaching hospital of the University “Martin Luther” Halle-Wittenberg, under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Hans-Dieter Goering and later Prof. Dr. Christos Zouboulis.

In 2007, he completed his PhD in dermatology and oncology and continued his residency in the Departments of Dermatology, Venereology, Allergology, and Pediatric Pulmonology in Kühlungsborn, Germany. He obtained his specialty qualification in Dermatology and Venereology in 2008.

From 2008 to 2010, Dr. Tchernev actively contributed to the creation and establishment of a dermatology and dermatologic surgery outpatient clinic in Kirchheim, Germany. In 2010, he was awarded the academic title of Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Faculty of Medicine of Thracian University in Stara Zagora, in the Department of Dermatology and Venereology.

Since 2011, he has served as Associate Professor of Dermatology at the Policlinic of the University Hospital “Lozenets,” an academic teaching hospital of Sofia University “St. Kliment Ohridski.” He is also the founder and owner of a private dermatology and dermatologic surgery clinic, “Onkoderma,” located in Sofia, Bulgaria.

His scientific interests focus on dermatologic surgery, dermatologic oncology, the pathogenesis of immunologically mediated skin diseases, and both theoretical and clinical immunology. Professor Tchernev also served as Professore a Contratto at the University “G. Marconi” of Rome during the 2015–2016 academic year.

Professor Tchernev has authored more than 300 scientific works, including over 220 articles published in international (and some Bulgarian) journals, such as The New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Investigative Dermatology, The Lancet, Mayo Clinic Proceedings, and Medicine (Baltimore). He has also authored and co-authored three books with more than 40 chapters in total. He is a regular participant in national and international dermatology conferences worldwide.

Since March 2016, Georgi Tchernev has been a Professor at the Medical Institute of the Ministry of Interior (MVR), Department of Dermatology, Venereology, and Dermatologic Surgery.

Biography

Gianluca Nazzaro, MD (Milan, Italy, 1986), is an Assistant Dermatologist at the IRCCS Foundation Ospedale Maggiore Policlinico, University of Milan.

He obtained his medical degree and completed his residency in Dermatology and Venereology at the University of Milan under the guidance of Prof. Emilio Berti, Prof. Stefano Veraldi, and Prof. Raffaele Gianotti.

Since 2011, he has been a lecturer in the Master’s program in Medicine and Dermatology.

He is the author of 81 peer-reviewed articles published in international journals (H-index: 7).

He has received several awards, including the EADV Scholarship and the AAD Scholarship. He was also awarded by the Italian Society of Dermatology (SIDeMaST) for the best publication among young researchers in 2015. He is a member of the EADV Alumni Club, a group dedicated to young researchers within the EADV.

He has been a speaker at numerous national and international congresses on clinical dermatology.
